Panic is designed to protect us during the times when there is a high probability of severe injury and death. It shunts blood to the brain, heart, and lungs so you can survive. Heart attacks and strokes don’t happen during panic attacks but believing that they will helps keep you from harm. In reality you are very safe in a panic attack. Your body is misinterpreting the data causing you to feel terrified, sweaty, short of breath, and paralyzed.
We all have suffered a panic attack at some time in our lives. When we feel panic in the context of a real threat to our existance, we are not concerned about the panic. Think of yourself in a car rolling down the side of a mountain. Of course the feelings of panic don’t bother you. It is the car rolling down the mountain that commands all of your attention. Panic attacks become a problem when they happen in the grocery store or any other location that doesn’t make sense. Now the panic has not given you a cue that it will happen. You have no way to prepare for it. You start limiting what you do in order to avoid having a panic attack. Now the fear of panic takes control of your life.
The classic panic attack looks a little different then the classic heart attack. But a panic attack and a heart attack can have exactly the same symptoms. Do not assume it is a panic attack the first time it happens. Always have a doctor or emergency room confirm that you are not having a heart attack immediately. When a panic attack has been confirmed, then seek treatment for the panic.
Panic attacks develop overtime. They are a result of chronic anxiety. If you don’t get rid of the anxiety then it can blossom into full blown panic attacks. This is true for any negative emotion that continues to fester inside.
In my past as an RN I used David Burns’ method for eliminating panic attacks. I would teach a client how to have a full blown panic attack on purpose. We then would do their favorite cognitive technique to eliminate the distorted beliefs about the panic. Doing this while they were in the panic stopped the panic attacks permanently. Unfortunately the anxiety and depression underlying the panic was not eliminated. Although we were using the same techniques for those other emotions, they kept returning over and over again. I didn’t understand why. I spent years looking for an answer.
