Short term stress is beneficial to your memory. You feel more alive, awake, and aware. It can be a game, a sporting event, or even an unpleasant experience that activates you. As long as it is short term, it is helpful.
Stressful events that become chronic start killing brain cells. It accelerates the process of getting Alzheimer’s disease by suppressing Long Term Potentiation or LTP. In each brain cell LTP imprints a memory by causing the cell to have a much larger reaction. When LTP is knocked out by chronic stress every experience will require you to relearn the memory from scratch. When this degradation of memory gets severe enough, it qualifies as dementia. This is not normal aging.
Short term stress is good for your nervous system, your hormones, and your immune system. Taxing your system with a quick recovery strengthens your responses. Afterwards you have an increased ability to fight off bacteria, become relaxed, and recall information. Sprinting a short distance increases your cardiac and lung capacity while increasing your growth hormone. Physical and emotional short term stressors make you faster on your feet both physically and mentally. Growth hormone is the hormone of youth that replaces the damaged cells you need.
Even moderate long term stress destroys your body’s supply of glutathione. This is your master antioxidant. Without enough glutathione all of the rest of your antioxidant vitamins cannot be recycled. You suffer very high levels of oxidative stress. Free radicals destroy the molecules in your body that make up every bit of what and who you are. The list of diseases caused by low glutathione levels include chronic fatigue syndrome, heart disease, cancer, chronic infections, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, arthritis, asthma, kidney problems, and liver disease. This is an incomplete list.
Chronic stress is caused by how we think. We tend to believe situations cause us to feel stressed. It is true that without Pro EFT stress elimination we mostly cannot control how we react. But in reality the way we perceive the event determines how stressed we will be. It also determines whether the stressor will be short lived or chronic.
Before I discovered EFT I was therapy coordinator for a psychiatric day program in the southwest. One of the clients really brought the point home to me that how we think determines our stress level. The client in question suffered from extreme anxiety related to intolerable trauma she suffered as a child. Whenever she walked in the group room and was very calm I knew traffic had been horrible for her on the way in to the program. Her conditional belief was; If I am in stop and go traffic then there is nothing I can do about it, therefore there is no reason to feel anxious.
Most of us get stressed out by stop and go traffic. If we are in traffic jams enough times it becomes one of our chronic stressors. When you think about it, anxiety is to avoid getting hurt. Car wrecks are not fatal at 5 mph. It makes good survival sense to be calm in stop and go traffic and anxious when the freeway is clear and we are doing 75. Unfortunately on our own we can’t convince our unconscious mind to think this way.
With Pro EFT stress elimination we first lower the stress from the specific events that are bothering you. If it goes to zero distress quickly then it is a simple issue. By the time clients end up in a session with me this is almost never the case. Usually we find out that the event cannot be eliminated entirely because there are good reasons it is so stressful. Thoughts like, “there is no excuse for being late, anyone who is late doesn’t respect you,” begin pouring out. This is what a chronic age producing stressor sounds like.
We then find the reasons for these highly charged emotional reactions. These reasons are called Core Issues. Without them you can’t have chronic stress and early aging. We eliminate the stress from these memories. Your chronic stress response then is gone from the issue. There are no more directions to get stressed out in your unconscious mind. There is no reservoir of stress inside you just waiting for right event to set the flood of emotions free. After eliminating a Core Issue you may still feel some stress when something bad happens. This stress will become a short term stressor, the healthy kind. You then will be able to let it go and start feeling how you want to feel soon after. You will get stronger and healthier instead of growing old before your time.
At the end of each session I will give you daily tapping tune ups that you can do for yourself. They take from two to fifteen minutes to do depending on how advanced your skills have become.
